Overview

Early Stages offers FREE workshops for parents and professionals. Our certified trainers host interactive lectures and discussions about many early childhood topics. Parents and professionals can learn ways to support child development. Professionals can also earn Professional Learning Units (PLUs). Workshops are available in English and Spanish.

Workshop Topics

How to Refer a Child to Early Stages

1 hour for professionals only 

We explain why and how to refer a child to Early Stages. We explore ways to speak to families about a referral. You learn about potential barriers to referral. We outline what families can expect from the special education evaluation process with Early Stages. You leave with strategies to support families through this process.  

Addressing Challenging Behaviors 

3 hours or two 1.5 hour sessions for professionals

We discuss why children behave the way they do. You learn the ABCs of behavior. We discuss how to collect and study information about challenging behaviors. You learn helpful ways to manage difficult behavior in children under 6.   

Developmental Milestones for 3-5 Year-Olds 

2 hours for professionals

We discuss how children learn and grow from ages 3 to 5. We cover milestones in these areas: communication, early learning, physical, and social-emotional. You learn how to support a child's growth in each area. You learn why it is important for children who need services to receive them as early as possible.    

An Overview of Special Education

We provide an overview of the special education evaluation process. You learn about special education law. We discuss parent rights in the process. You learn definitions of important special education terms. We discuss how to refer a child for an evaluation. 

Navigating the DCPS Special Education Process 

1 hour for parents

We discuss the DCPS special education process, from referral to services. You learn how to prepare for meetings and how to become an advocate for your child. We share tips for creating a strong support system. You leave with resources that provide guidance through this process.  

The Importance of Early Intervention and an Overview of Early Stages 

1.5 hours for professionals

We explain why supporting children early is valuable. You learn why it is important for children who need services to receive them as early as possible. We discuss how this makes a difference for families and communities. We review the Early Stages process. You learn about special education referrals and evaluations. 

Trauma and Resilience: Building Strength in Children

2 hours for professionals

We explore how trauma can affect the developing brain. You learn ways to support children and help them build resilience. We provide caregivers with self-care tips. We discuss how to develop emotional strength in children. 

How to Administer the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs) 

3 hours for ASQ-3 AND ASQ:SE-2, professionals only

We review screening tools and their role in early intervention. We provide instructions for administering the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs). You learn how to score the ASQs. We discuss how to communicate with parents about their child’s development. 

Implementing a Screening Program Using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs)

We provide an overview of the Ages and Stages Questionnaires (ASQs). You learn how to choose the best screening method for your organization. We show you how to implement that screening method. 

The Importance of Family Engagement

2 hours for professionals

1 hour for parents

We define family engagement. You learn why it matters in early childhood education. We introduce key players in family engagement. You learn about effective family engagement in action. After a group discussion, you leave with a toolkit of ideas for engagement. Parents and teachers learn how to engage with their school community. 

Sleep Concerns & the Importance of Sleep 

Two 45-minute sessions or one 90-minute session, parents only

We discuss facts about sleep, including what typical sleep looks like and why sleep hygiene is important. You learn how to set the stage for healthy sleep. We share information about the sleep window and how to create a consistent bedtime routine. You learn about sleep challenges and how to address them, including when to seek professional help.  

An Overview of Autism  

Two 1.5 hour sessions for professionals

Two 1.5 hour sessions for parents

We discuss the basics of autism. You learn about typical communication and social-emotional milestones by age. We review signs of autism. You learn how to support children with autism at home and in the classroom.
